Eyelid Plastic Surgery / Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a set of surgical procedures performed by a plastic surgeon to remove sagging skin and excess muscle tissue and to tighten the tissues around the eyes. A blepharoplasty is performed on the upper/lower eyelids or both. The surgery, although cosmetic, is medically necessary when there is significant vision impairment.
However, keep in mind the surgery doesn’t involve the areas adjacent to the eyes, so it won’t get rid of crow’s feet or laugh lines around the eyes. It also won’t get rid of any wrinkles that are not in the surgical areas, from where the skin is removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

You are a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you have:

  • Drooping eyelids due to loose, saggy skin. Droopy eyelid surgery can improve the vision and appearance of the eyes.
  • Bags in the lower eyelids, making your eyes appear puffy.
  • Ectropion – a condition in which the weakening of muscles in the lower eyelids makes them turn outwards.
  • Loose skin on the lower eyelids. Saggy eyelid surgery will reposition the lower eyelids slightly upwards.
  • Asymmetrical eyes due to skin laxity. Uneven eyelid surgery can fix this problem if it is caused by excess fat, skin or weak muscles.

Usually, blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you can go back to your hotel on the same day. You may experience redness, dryness, swelling and bruising soon after the surgery. However, it is temporary. Make sure that you’re resting for normal eyelid surgery recovery. Avoid reading, using your phone or watching TV for 2-3 days.
Although you’ll notice an immediate change, you’ll have to wait for a few weeks to months for the swelling and scarring to subside to see the final results. The results of the surgery are permanent. However, keep in mind that blepharoplasty won’t stop ageing, so your skin quality will change with time.
