Cancer Treatment

Medical oncology is the medical unit that provides services on the treatment processes and follow-up plans of patients diagnosed with cancer. In our hospital, which is our solution partner, cooperation is made within the framework of a multidisciplinary approach with the specialist health staff and the radiology, radiation oncology, pathology, surgical unit, nuclear medicine and internal units in our medical oncology units. Chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments are applied to our patients under the control of specialist physicians in our hospitals. While algologists support patients for pain treatment, psychologists and nutritionists actively participate in the treatment process. Chemotherapy applications are carried out in our inpatient services when necessary, as well as in the outpatient treatment unit.

In our medical oncology departments, screenings are also carried out for people at risk of cancer and detailed information is provided on cancer prevention.

You can get treatment in the early process and prevent more serious complications that you may encounter in the future by having regular check-ups for your disease and showing the necessary sensitivity to the treatment plan recommended by your physician.

Surgical oncology, in other words cancer surgery, is an important branch of medicine in which surgical methods are used to treat cancer. Historically, it has been a frequently used area in cancer treatment before many different treatment methods were developed. The main purpose of surgical oncology is to completely separate the tumor from the body and treat it. However, even if it is not possible to completely separate the tumor from the body thanks to the developing medical and drug technologies, surgical oncology can be used as a part of multiple treatment methods. In this context, surgical oncology can be used in many areas in cancer treatment.

Two different surgical techniques can be used in surgical oncology. These are open surgery and minimally invasive surgery. While surgery is performed by making a large incision in open surgery, small incisions are made in minimally invasive surgery and surgery is performed with different techniques. In minimally invasive surgery, surgery is performed by applying different techniques such as laparoscopy, laser surgery, cryosurgery and robotic surgery.

Laparoscopy: With this method, the surgical oncologist makes several small incisions. He uses a thin tube-shaped laparoscope with a small camera at the end to capture the internal image through these incisions, and performs the surgery using surgical instruments through other incisions.

Laser surgery: In this method, surgery is performed using a laser, which is a high-intensity light beam.

Cryosurgery: This is a treatment method in which the surgical oncologist freezes or kills the cancerous mass using liquid nitrogen.

Robotic surgery: In this method, which is similar to the laparoscopic method, the surgical oncologist performs the surgery using robotic instruments with the help of a computer instead of using the surgical instruments with their hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although the main purpose of surgical oncology is to separate the cancerous mass from the body, it also has different purposes for the patient. The aims of surgical oncology in treatment are:

  • Diagnosis: Surgical oncology can be used to determine whether and if the surgically removed mass is cancerous, its type.
  • Staging: With the surgical method, it can be learned how far the cancer has progressed and whether it has spread to other organs. Surgical oncology plays an important role in this regard.
  • Treatment: Surgical oncology can be used in three different ways in treatment.

The first of these is radical surgery, in which the cancerous mass is completely removed and treated.
The second is curative surgery, in which a part of the cancerous mass is removed and reduction is performed when it is not possible to completely remove the cancerous mass. In addition to these two treatments, other oncological treatment methods such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be required.
The third type of treatment is support surgery, which helps other treatment methods. Placement of the infusion port is an example of supportive surgery.

  • Palliative surgery: Surgical oncology can be used to alleviate symptoms caused by advanced cancer. For example, the pain caused by the cancerous mass by pressing on the bone or nerve can be alleviated by surgical oncology, and thus the patient’s quality of life can be improved.
  • Conservative surgery: In some cases, a mass in the body may not be cancerous, but it may also have the risk of turning into cancer in the future. In such cases, surgical oncology plays a role in preventing a future cancer disease by separating this mass from the body.
  • Reconstructive surgery: Sometimes the body may not look the same after the tumor is removed from the body. Surgical oncology plays an important role in restoring the body to its former appearance with the reconstructive surgery method.

Surgical oncology plays an active role in the diagnosis, staging and treatment of many types of cancer. The types of cancer for which surgical oncology can be used are as follows:

  • Breast cancer
  • Brain cancer
  • Soft tissue cancer (Sarcoma)
  • Gastric cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Types of gynecological cancers
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Melanomas and skin cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Bone cancer
